Etched Pixels / Ultima N Gauge Catalogue 2016 LNER Thompson Coaches

During the Second World War the LNER emergency board of directors produced a post war development plan. The 1944 report estimated that around 4600 new carriages would be required to replaced the ageing fleet. After testing a prototype coach in 1945 the new CME Edward Thompson produced a series of designs for post war all steel coaches. The LNER began building the coaches in 1945, but material shortages and lack of labour meant that it took eight years to complete the building program, much of which occurred under British Rail management. Most of the vehicles were scrapped in the mid 1960s with the last catering stock going in 1968, and the sleepers in 1970, being outlasted by the last Gresley stock.

The earlier coaches had square edged windows, the later British Rail builds had curved window edges to reduce corrosion problems.

Underframe Conversion

This provides a replacement underframe for converting a Farish Mark 1 coach into a Thompson 63ft vehicle. Designed to be used with our range of vinyl sides. The kit contains etched truss rods, V hangers, and battery boxes, white metal dynamo and vacuum cylinders plus instructions and diagrams.

These kits contain etched floor trussing and sides, plastic roof and ends, brass buffers, white metal detailing parts, 3D printed glue in bogie mounts, RTR Dapol Gresley bogies and NEM coupling adapters. A small amount of filling of the plastic roof is necessary.
